Most people are worried about taking things out of their water, and for good reason. Things like lead, bacteria, and nitrates can be dangerous for your body. However, sometimes you want some stuff dissolved in your water. Alkalines are compounds that raise the pH of water. The theory is that the alkalines in water can neutralize acids in your bloodstream, which can prevent all kinds of health problems. Many studies are currently underway to determine whether or not alkalines can help prevent cancer and heart disease.
Alkaline water filters are filters you can attach to your water line to put some extra alkalines in your water. Alkaline water filters are much cheaper in the long run than buying bottled alkaline waters or buying alkaline supplements. If you are looking for a reliable and cost-effective way to get some more alkaline in your diet, an alkaline water filter might be a good idea.
Before we start covering alkaline filters, we should point out the difference between ionizers and filters. Both devices add more alkalines to your water but they work in different ways. Ionizers change the pH of the water using electricity while filters physically move water through mineral filters. Ionizers require electricity while filters don’t need anything but gravity to work.
Ok, now that those explanations are done let’s cover the best alkaline water filters/ionizers out there.

Best Alkaline Filters for Home Use
1. M9 Next Generation Water Ionizer
Up first on our list is the amazing powerful under-the-sink water ionizer from Life Ionizer. The M9 costs a pretty penny but if you have the funds then it’s hard to find a comparable alkaline water ionizer. The device connects to your water line under the sink and raises the pH of water by pumping in hydrogen to create antioxidants. This water ionizer has an all-metal finish with no plastic parts, a digital touch screen display, and a quick-response one-touch activation button. As we said, the M9 is pretty expensive but the high-quality materials and construction are worth the extra cash.
This alkaline ionizer has customizable pH levels and can modulate from 2.5 to 11. The machine uses 9 different platinum plates to effectively ionize water and give it a unique taste. Platinum is also long-lasting and corrosion-resistant so the plates will last for a long time. The M9 runs on 110 volts of electricity and has a powerful 450-watt motor that keeps water pressure high.
The only downside is the price. It is very high quality, which means it carries a high price tag. You also will have to factor in installation costs. If you are particularly mechanically inclined you could probably install it yourself, but otherwise, you should stick to a professional.
You absolutely cannot deny the quality of the M9 though. The water quality is great and it has a high variable pH range so you can customize it to your needs. If you have the money for the purchase and maintenance cost, we highly recommend the M9.
What We Like:
- Ultra-powerful motor and pressure
- Ionizes using platinum plates
- UV filtering protection
- 2.5-11 pH range
- Under counter design saves space
What We Didn’t Like:
- Very expensive
- High maintenance costs
- Might require professional installation
2. Express Water Alkaline Filtration System
Many physical water alkaline systems add trace minerals to water to increase the pH level. The addition of metals sucks of the rouge ions that make the water acidic. The Express Water alkaline filtration system adds over 7 different minerals to your drinking water, including calcium, magnesium, and potassium while also removing harmful contaminants such as lead, chlorine, arsenic, and bacteria. Unlike many filters that only run the water through a couple of stages, the Express Water puts water through a 10 stage filtration process that adds up to 20% more oxygen content than comparable filters.
The Express Water filter connects under your sink you water filter The water first passes through a filtration system that pulls all the bad contaminants out and then through 5 different filters made from mineral rocks. A shut off valve automatically closes off the water pressure if excess water is detected and a felt disc base will absorb and excess water that leaks out.
Best of all, it’s easy to maintain. The filers only need to be switched out twice a year which can be done by hand. Labels and colors let you know where each piece goes so there is no guesswork. The included faucet is made from a brass alloy and the entire system can produce up to 100 gallons of pure water each day.
The Express Water does take a few days to break in. At first, you might notice the mineral taste to be overpowering. One the filters are broken in though, the taste becomes much milder.
What We Like:
- 10-stage filter
- 5 different minerals
- Removes harmful contaminants
- Easy maintenance and replacement
- Auto-shutoff valve
What We Didn’t Like:
- First few glasses taste funky
- Have to buy special brand filters
3. Aqua Ionizer Deluxe
The Aqua Ionizer Deluxe has 9 different filtration plates. The extra plates make the ionization process much more efficient and improve the alkalinity and antioxidant composition of the water. This model is on the pricier side, although not as expensive as the M9 covered earlier. The main difference between the two aside from the price is that the Aqua Ionizer can also work as a countertop model, though it is recommended to install it under the sink. The Aqua Ionizer Deluxe has 7 different water filtration settings so you can customize the mineral concentration of your water.
The advanced filtration system can produce over 4000 liters a day so its perfect for homes of any size. You will find yourself saving money on plastic water bottles and you’ll be helping the environment by cutting down your plastic usage. You can use water from the Aqua Ionizer for cooking, tea/coffee, drinking, and household cleaning. The device even has special settings buttons specifically for those uses. At 110 volts, it is very power-conscious so it won’t add a ton to your electricity bill.
Again, the Aqua Ionizers is a pretty penny but it’s worth the price for the high quality. You can install it yourself, but the company offers expert installation for an extra fee.
What We Like:
- 9 separate filtration plates
- 7 different filtration modes for different uses
- Also can make water more acidic
- Lightweight
- Can function on the countertop
What We Didn’t Like:
- Somewhat expensive
- Requires professional installation
4. IntelGadgets Advanced Alkaline Water Ionizer
The IntelGadgets Advanced Alkaline Water Ionizer can regulate water pH between 4.5 and 11, so you can make it more acidic or basic, depending on the use. The IntelGadgets also lets you change the oxidation level so you can add more antioxidants if you want. The device changes the water pH via electrolysis. It uses high-quality platinum-finished titanium plates and after each use, the unit performs a 10-second cleaning cycle to keep the plates clean and efficient. The ion membrane is made from a heat resistant material that is non-toxic and won’t affect the taste of the water.
The device features a bright 7 color LCD display that tells the pH and alkaline levels of the water. It purifies the water by removing chlorine, salt, dirt, pesticides, and other pollutants. A safety switch lets you change the water pH to acidic for cooking, brewing coffee and cleaning, or to a more basic composition for drinking. It puts water through 7 different stages of filtration and all necessary components to hook it up come with the purchase.
As a nice addition, the IntelGadget comes with a free water testing kit so you can definitively check to make sure it’s working. The only problem we found was that you can only set the pH level by definite intervals. So some find it hard to dial in a precise setting.
The bottom line, if you are looking for a stylish and effective water ionization filter, then the IntelGadgets is a good choice. It has some great features, is easy to use, and comes with a generous 2-year warranty that covers all manufacturer damage.
What We Like:
- Makes water more acidic and basic
- Digital touch button controls
- Auto-cleaning cycle
- Good water pressure
- Simple to use
What We Didn’t Like:
- Only changes via definite intervals
- The adjustment can be too touchy
5. pH On-the-Go Alkaline Water Filter Pouches
And now for something a bit different. While the other products covered have been systems that hook up directly to your faucet, these filter packets are meant to be added to a portable source of water to remove contaminants and increase alkaline levels. Each packet contains a mixture of minerals and purifying agents that remove chlorine, heavy metals, and fluorine and add calcium, magnesium, and iron to your water. Since they are single-use packets, they are meant to be used in water bottles, pitchers or jugs. It makes a great fail-safe if you are drinking from an unfiltered system or you need to purify some water while camping.
Each packet contains multiple ingredients that filter and purify water in separate stages. All you need to do it open the resealable pouch, let it soak in the water for a few minutes, then remove the pack. Each filter lasts for at least 300 cups of water and each pack comes with 3 filters. If you are drinking 8 cups of water a day, then each filter should last you at least a month (~30 days).
The packets not only increase the alkalinity of the water but also filters out bad things that are inimical to your health. The main feature of the alkaline water filter pouches we like is how convenient they are. Now can have fresh alkaline water wherever you go, in as little as a minute.
What We Like:
- Portable and convenient
- A single package can be used for 300 cups of water
- Affordable
- Filters in just under a minute
What We Didn’t Like:
- Packets can break
- It says 300 uses, but it’s more like ~250
6. Apex Countertop Alkaline Drinking Filter
If you don’t want to spend the time or effort installing an under-the-sink water filter, then you could always opt for a portable countertop one. The Apex Countertop Alkaline Drinking Filter is a portable alkaline filter that can directly connect to your kitchen faucet in just 15 seconds. It is easy to install and can be removed whenever you want as well. When you attach it to your faucet, it channels the water through a charcoal/mineral-based water filter to remove harmful pollutants and boost the pH levels.
The main feature of the Apex is how cost-effective it is. It’s very affordable at just under $100 and can cut down on your expense if you drink a lot of mineralized bottled water. Apex is also a trusted brand when it comes to water filters so you can rest easy knowing you are buying from a company that has years of success backing its reputation.
One thing we noticed looking at reviews is that the Apex has a very long life, much longer than you’d expect from a sub $100 water filter. However, the nature of the design means that water can get trapped and form mildew if not cleaned regularly. Also, bubbles tend to get caught in the filter so you will have to run it first when you connect it to get rid of excess air.
What We Like:
- Simple countertop design is easy to install and use
- 5 layer filtration system
- Requires no power, only uses gravity to filter
- Very affordable
- Long lifespan relative to the price
What We Didn’t Like:
- Mildew can form if water gets trapped
- Air bubbles can get trapped when installing
7. Pure Hydration All Natural Water Ionizer
What we especially like about the Pure Hydration All-natural Water ZIonizer is that it looks like an expensive electric filter, but it’s not. Despite its appearance, the Pure Hydration only requires gravity to work and can be hooked up to your main water line and sit on your counter. Just flip open the valve, place your glass, and press the button and the device will dispense clean filtered drinking water. The Pure Hydration runs the water through 4 different filtration cartridges, two of which filter the water and the other two add the mineral content. The side panel opens up so you can access and remove filters when it’s time to replace them.
One thing we do not like about Pure Hydration is that you can’t change the pH level. It hovers around 9 pH so it’s not too big of a deal, but it may be a problem if you want some customization in your water filter. It is very compact and will easily fit on your kitchen counter and the metal finish makes it look sleek and sophisticated.
Two more issues we noticed were that installation can be a bit tricky as there are two different installation settings and it can be hard to figure out which one it’s on. Also, the filters are good but they need pretty frequent replacement, especially if you use the filter every day. Unfortunately, these filters are proprietary so you have to buy a special one; you can’t just use a generic third-party filter. The ned to buy other filters can make the operating cost pretty high.
Despite these flaws, the Pure Hydration is a perfectly competent alkaline water filter and is certainly worth the purchase, especially if you want a good quality filter you don’t have to install under your sink.
What We Like:
- Compact and space-conscious
- Easy to install and connect
- 4-stage filtration process
- Easy to replace filters
- Can be installed in your fridge
What We Didn’t Like:
- Set up can be a bit funky
- Filters need to be replaced frequently
- Have to buy special filters
8. IonTech Alkaline Water Ionizer
Coming in at eighth is the IonTech alkaline Water Ionizer, another high-quality under-the-sink alkaline filter. The IonTech has a simple box-like design that attaches directly to your water line under your sink and pumps water to the included special faucet. One of the cool features of the IonTech is that you can control the alkalinity and acidity levels using the buttons on the faucet. This means you don’t have to open up your cabinets to change water settings. It even has two separate faucets, one for acidic water and the other for alkaline water.
The under-the-sink unit purifies water and runs it through 5 premium titanium filter plates that increase the pH using electrical currents. It also has an auto switch back mechanisms that change back to the alkaline setting once you are done using the acidic setting, so you don’t accidentally drink acidic water. You can also change the pH level from the buttons on the faucet. It even comes with a free pH testing kit so you can be absolutely sure the faucet is working as intended.
One last interesting feature is the auto-cleaning function. After each use, the IonTech initiates a ten-second electrolysis process meant to clean the plates and keep them in good condition. If the onboard sensors detect an unusually large amount of blockage, you can start a longer more thorough 2-minute cleaning process. It also lights up to tell you when the filters need to be changed, which is around once a year assuming daily use. This water filter also comes with a generous 2-year warranty from the manufacturer that covers all damage.
What We Like:
- Can control water settings from the faucet
- 5 titanium plate filtration system
- Can be installed on your own
- 2 faucets, one for basic water and the other for acidic water
- 2-year warranty
What We Didn’t Like:
- Manual is confusing to read
- Relatively small pH range compared to some other filters (5.5-10.5)
9. Zen Water Systems Countertop Filtration System
Up next is another tabletop filtration system. Like the Apex that we covered earlier, the Zen Water Systems Countertop filtration system sits neatly on top of your kitchen counter and can produce clean alkaline water with just the push of a switch. It runs your water through a 5-stage carbon-based filtration mechanism that includes a layer of charcoal. The 5 layers filter, purify, mineralize, and alkalinize the water before dispensing it into your glass. It’s perfect if you need a cheap and affordable way to get alkaline drinking water in your home.
The Zen does not connect directly to your faucet, so you have to periodically fill it. The top tank has a 2-gallon capacity and the bottom tanks a 4-gallon capacity, so it can hold 6 gallons at once. It takes around 15 minutes for the Zen to fully filter 2 gallons from the top, which means you can completely fill it in asl little as 30 minutes. After that, just depress the switch and it will dispense clean mineralized water. It only stands about 25 inches tall and is 13 inches in diameter, so it can fit on your countertop, coffee table, or bedroom nightstand.
Since it does not hook up to anything, that means you can take it with you to have alkaline water on the go. It makes a great companion for camping, tailgating, or any kind of outdoor activity. You can also buy a larger 8-gallon capacity model for a slightly higher price.
What We Like:
- Does not need to hook up to your faucet
- 5-layer filtration system
- Filters 4 gallons in 30 minutes
- Perfect for on-the-go mineral water
- Great for outdoor events
- 1,000-gallon filter life
What We Didn’t Like:
- You have to refill it
- Only uses special brand filters
Conclusions:
You should be drinking lots of water every day, but what good is it if the water doesn’t have the minerals and nutrients they need? A home alkaline water filter is a great way to ensure you get the daily minerals you need and as a way to make drinking water fun again.
